He had a hard time meeting Basil's eyes. "Oh," he said. They were from the same district. He imagined killing her on live television- all of home watching him kill someone from his own district. A cold stone of dread dropped in Philip's stomach. Whatever it takes to win, he reminded himself.

Basil's smile wavered for a moment. That look in his eyes... Then it was gone.
"I can see you're set on winning the games, apart from those who haven't given up hope and aren't planning on losing just to get out of the districts. You'll have some competition."

"I'm ready," he responded simply. "Don't you want to win?" Were there really so many who had no desire to be a victor? Who didn't want to be a hero- a celebrity?

Basil bit her lip and sneered. "Of course I want to win, why do you think I said you'd have some competition? Anyway, there's more to the games than just being famous, you get food for your family and money." She thought of Sparrow and looked around. He would have to watch her kill these people.

Philip shrugged. Food for his family. Yeah, like he'd actually need that after what had happened to most of his family- and it being his fault as well. The few left wouldn't accept any help he dared to offer. He looked over at her. "Does this mean you'll be my competition?" he asked her, eyes narrowing.

"Or an ally, your choice." Basil thought of the old saying, 'keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.' "The closer the better." She mumbled under her breath. He Might just help her get near the end if he didn't turn against her first. It was a dangerous decision, but she had a feeling this pairing could be more dangerous than the careers.

I looked at him, wondering why he stopped, and quickly remembered we were in the Capitol with his father close by. As realization hit I dropped his hand, not wanting to get caught, but couldn't stop from blushing furiously. "I- um... I," I stammered, again realizing what I had been doing.

I looked around, desperately hoping I hadn't been caught. It wasn't obvious that anyone had been watching me, but then again, they didn't have to. I swore under my breath. Careless...
"It's fine," I said, calmly. "I won't press on the subject. So, do you need anything else for the games?"

Calming down, I thought through what I had to do, "Nope, I'm ok," I replied, my smile returning. I desperately hoped that we weeny caught. If we were, it would be my fault.

His violet eyes hardened until he finally asked, "How's your fighting?" Philip had to be sure he could depend on her. A useless ally was not what he needed. It wasn't ideal but if she was good...things could still work out. The thing was, Philip couldn't easily betray people once he got to know them. If he decided they were a team, he knew he was too soft. He wouldn't be able to turn on her.
