The story takes place in the world of Remnant, which is filled with supernatural forces and shadowy creatures known as the "Creatures of Grimm". Prior to the events of the series, mankind waged a battle of survival against the Grimm before discovering the power of a mysterious element called Dust, which allowed them to fight back against the monsters. In the present day, Dust is used to power magical abilities and weapons. Those who use these abilities to battle the Grimm are known as Huntsmen or Huntresses.. At Beacon Academy in the city of Vale, hunters and Huntresses are trained.

The Grimm are monsters that appear throughout the world of Remnant. They are mostly black in color, and each one has a white mask with red trail-like designs. Ever since the dawn of mankind, the Grimm have battled against the humans. They are described as creatures of destruction and they lack souls, thus they have no auras. The name "Grimm" comes from the pair of brothers who wrote several fairy tales.

*Beowolf: Grimm creatures who bear resemblance to werewolves.Beowolves appeared without their white masks, looking more like the traditional werewolf, before they were redesigned.

*Ursa: Bear-like Grimm creatures. The normal Ursa only has the white mask and boney spikes on its back, but a larger one has more white boney parts all over its body.

*King Taijitu: Large snake-like Grimm creatures. It has two heads, one at each end, with one half of the creature being predominantly black with some white, while the other half is the inverse.

*Death Stalker: Large scorpion-like Grimm creatures who have glowing golden stingers on their tails.

*Nevermore: Giant Grimm creatures that take the form of a bird. They have the ability to shoot large feathers to pin down enemies or prey.

*Boarbatusk: Boar-like Grimm creatures.

Crescent Rose. It is a weapon she made all by herself. Crescent Rose's frame is colored rose-red with black trims, with its large scythe blade forged into a crescent shape. Ruby's crest is engraved onto the circular swivel frame of the weapon. The most notable property of Crescent Rose is its foldable frame: it allows Crescent Rose to transform to different modes of combat, from a full-scale scythe and sniper rifle form to a condensed rifle form. It can also fold up tightly and be holstered for easy convenient transportation, stored underneath Ruby's cloak at her waist. Also, though it appears to be a bolt-action weapon, it does not need to be in its gun mode to fire.

. Blake is described as being "mellow" by her voice actress, Arryn Zech. She displays a cool, reserved and serious personality most of the time but doesn't lack a humorous side. Blake is a righteous person who has respect for other people's lives. Regardless of whether they are Faunus or not, she treats everyone equally and strongly despises those who judge and discriminate based on racial assumptions. Blake is also an open person and is not afraid to speak her mind. She would go as far as indirectly insulting a well-known company in front of one of its members.

Blake is shown to be an introvert who prefers to be alone. When she is not, she sometimes may exclude herself from conversations and demonstrate no interest toward the discussion at hand, especially when she is reading. Blake is extremely fond of books, which is shown through her bringing a large uantity of books with her to Beacon and reading frequently. Due to her Faunus heritage, she is a realistic person who has seen how the real world works, which also contributes to her stance as a skeptic on the possibility of attaining a righteous world.
