Ling looked around, making sure no one was watching. Although it wasn't a crime, she didn't want anyone to know that she was a waterbender. Things were complicated enough as it is. She pulled her long chocolate blonde hair out of its bun, and raised her hands above her head, and swirling them through the air. Flowers sprouted from the ground, and she twirled her fingers. The petals burst, growing fuller and fuller. Hibiscus and lilies sprouted from every side of her, and a rose bush began to climb towards the sky. She closed her eyes, concentrated, and moved her arm in a sweeping motion, slowly raising her other. She opened her eyes, and took out her dagger, beginning to harvest the different flowers. She placed them all carefully into her pack, keeping it open so they didn't get crushed. She held the pack out in front of her, not wanting to ruin the flowers. She muttered something under her breath about the Norther Water Tribe, and continued walking away from the small garden that she called her own. She opened the gate that separated it from the rest of the city, and she made her way towards the wall that sheltered her small home and shop, ready to get to work. Fortunately, she had made it to the middle class, and now was living in the Middle Ring of the city, thanks to her flower shop, despite her age. Little did anyone know that she was living on her own, a girl with no parents.
She removed a Hibiscus from her pack, and handed it to one of the playing children that was running in the streets. She smiled down at the girl, and the girl smiled back, placing the flower in her short black hair. Ling continued towards her house, and unlocked the door, walking inside. She turned around to carefully lock the door again, and walked towards her table, setting the pack down and getting to work on cutting off the thorns on the roses. As she worked, she thought about how lucky she was to have such a safe house, and a wall around it even. That was a good privilege, but she wondered why the man had just given it to her so suddenly. He seemed almost nervous, and very anxious to give it to her. She shrugged, and finished up the roses. But something still gnawed at her mind. He had shown her the secret path to the gated garden... And told her that somewhere in the house, there was a passage of tunnels that winded through the city. She wondered if he was lying, because she hadn't found it yet. She had given him most of her money, and he accepted it, but it wasn't nearly enough for a house this nice. Why? Why would he do that? she contemplated. Anyone would laugh and tell me to find a house in the Lower Ring... But why? She had bought the shop next door with the rest of her money, and had already gotten most of it back through her business, but it still didn't make any sense to her.
((Sorry for the huge mega-long post, but I just came out of a bad case of writers block, and I'm just itching to write!))
