"It never saved me," Costel muttered, a little old hatred creeping into his voice as his fists clinched, "it never saved me or anyone else. It was just an instrument for their neverending wars." He closed his eyes for a moment, trying to shut it all out. He had tried to use it to escape the labs and the wars, but they had always found him, and several punished him for the attempts. "Maybe if I'd had the power to heal I could've actually saved someone." His left hand, so badly damaged by burn scars it looked like bone with some messed up skin drapped over it, clenched tightly and slid under the table and into his jacket pocket as he dipped his chin a bit so that his hair fell out of his hood and over the scars that covered the left side of his face.

But in the corner, at the cold
hour of dawn, sat the poor girl, with
rosy cheeks and with a smiling mouth,
leaning against the wall--frozen to
death on the last evening of the old
year. Stiff and stark sat the child
there with her matches, of which
one bundle had been burnt.
"She wanted to warm herself,"
people said. No one had the
slightest suspicion of what
beautiful things she had seen;
no one even dreamed of the
splendor in which, with her
grandmother she had entered
on the joys of a new year.
