Shale grinned. He had spent enough time around the grizzled Ranger to now he was joking. "I'm going to make myself some lunch. Do you want anything, besides coffee?"

Shale speared some left-over pieces of rabbot on a spit and set it over the fire, turning it regularly so the juices wouldn't drip into the fire. He put some potatoes into a pot of water over the fire to boil them. He pulled some pieces of bread out of the pantry.

The potatoes were done, and Shale pulled them out and cut them up, sending steam into the air. He placed them on a plate, then pulled the pieces of rabbbit of the spits and placed them on the plate as well. He added the pieces of bread and came out of the kitchen with his loaded plate. He sat down at the table.
