Ever stayed silent, clutch the handle of her crossbow with such force that he knuckles turned white. All of her was white, actually; flushed from stress and anxiety and malnourishment. With their parents dead, they didn't really know what to eat in order to stay healthy, but most of the time there wasn't a choice. People were smart enough to get the nonperishable. So all that was left was rotten produce and junk food.
But every once in awhile, Ever and her brother would stumble upon a house that didn't have a chance to get away. Grim as it was, it was beneficial to them as their food was still there. But those days were slim and she feared that there would soon be no days at all.

Daniel looked worse than his sister. As the older sibling, he assumed the role of caretaker and gave most of the food to her. Ever, with her mind warped by fear and stress, never questioned it. He was starting to regret that decision. If he kept starving himself of nutrients, he wouldn't be strong enough to protect himself, let alone others. But they did manage to hide.
They were holed up in the pastor's office of a local church. The door was locked and blocked from the inside, all of the windows were open for a quick escape, and they had all of their luggage packed up to grab and go if need be.

Phoenix did not feel the fear or apprehension that most people did. He'd killed people when they were smart, he could do it now too. He already had. Arrogant as he was, he was sure that he was the only one so confident in himself at the moment. It was a rather likely assumption, either way.
Phoenix held his crowbar in his hands. As he was in an urban area, there would be plenty of close calls in which a zombie would surprise him. A long ranged weapon wouldn't do him any good. He would save that for highways. He was crouched low as he navigated the building for medical supplies. As a former street rat, Phoenix was accustomed to being undernourished, but no one could help bleeding out without proper supplies and he was running low on gauze.
Phoenix glanced at the next house he would ransack. It looked rather decrepit with pieces burnt here and there. Nevertheless, no building was safe from his greedy hands. Least of this one. So he opened the door quickly and raised his crowbar to strike should anything be on the other side. There was nothing. But upon moving further in, he found other human. They were a greater threat than zombies if they decided to be.
