The annual Watanagashi Festival is on the horizon in the peaceful, rural village of Hinamizawa. In this festival, villagers give thanks to a local god, Oyashiro-sama. It all seems quiet at first, a normal festival for the small village to take part in. But soon a group of friend begins to uncover a much darker side to the legend of Oyashiro. It begins with a curse, and ends in m u r d e r.
The town of Hinamizawa is also inflicted with this particular June repeating. Over. And over. And over again. The blood will flow like wine....
It seems every year, during the Watanagashi Festival, one person dies and another simply goes missing. And during the time of this festival, whatever disease-- whatever sickness, paranoia, ailment-- might have been growing inside the villagers is strengthened. This is the Hinamizawa Syndrome. Its symptoms include hearing the footsteps of Oyashiro-sama behind you, and the constant ring of "I'm sorry... I'm sorry.... I'm sorry...." Victims of Hinamizawa Syndrome are prone to sudden violent acts such as murder or suicide. And, in the highest stage, will tend to claw at their own throats, trying to get the "maggots" out. Hinamizawa Syndrome is also commonly accompanied by hellish, glowing eyes with the pupils commonly slitted.
People are more likely to contract a higher level of Hinamizawa Syndrome by:
1. Entering the village.
2. Leaving the village.
3. Thinking about leaving the village.
4. Defying Oyashiro-sama.
5. Entering the Saiguden without permission.

Ryou is a practical thinker with no belief in Gods, spirits and other supernatural beings or happenings.
Ryou can get extremely jealous when someone does better than him at something he loves and paranoid at times, unable to trust others fully. He has an extreme sense of justice and how things should work. He is practically harmless and wouldn’t hurt a fly (Or would he?)

His bloodline is an ‘outsider’ to the rest of the village.
He has a very limited knowledge of Oyashiro-sama and he deals with the God and spirits of the village as nothing more than folktales used to scare children. He has contracted the syndrome because his family is not only outsiders from the rest of the village but also because of his lack of belief in the local God.
He attends the villages’ only school, but rather be outside playing games organised by the club he is part of.
