Violet smiled at Zia, too shy to make a bigger gesture, and moved closer to the little group. Calvin was really trying to do something for her, and it showed. Zia shouldn't be so hard on herself, she thought. She's going to have all of us by her side for the rest of her life, and I don't think anyone is going to desert her. Violet felt her back brush against Melody's and Calvin's and wondered what people might be thinking, looking at all of them on the floor. But then she put the thought aside, because, after all, who cared what anyone else thought.

Melody looked down in surprise as Calvin tugged on her hand. What was he...? Oh! Once she realized what he was doing, her eyes widened. She'd have to tie herself down, put her trust in someone and have them do the same to her. Have someone else's weight on her shoulders. But... it'd be shared. Sure, she'd have another person trusting her, but she would have someone to put her trust in, too. More than one person, if CAlvin was as smart as she thought he was. She nodded once and sat down beside him, one shoulder touching him and her other shoulder touching Zia. A team. Right, this could work.

That's my girl! he thought proudly of Melody. He nudged her shoulder with his, and flashed her a smile and a wink. He was quickly falling here, and he knew it. Everything about her seemed perfect. He knew what that meant too.

Calvin had fallen in love for the very first time at 11:32 a.m. on the seventh day of the month of August in the year 2009. On that day, his heart had a sudden and catastrophic reversal of polarity and his whole world turned upside down. One moment girls had been foul creatures to be destroyed on sight, and in the next moment, they were precious flowers to be cherished and revered as goddesses. And the catalyst for all this preteen upheaval had been Mercy Moon, a creature so divinely beautiful that when she sauntered through the door into Calvin's 6th grade English class there was a communal gasp of astonishment from the other students. The word was already out of course. He'd heard of the new girl - 'please Lord give me some Mercy' - by the time home room was over at 9:15 a.m. that morning. But who knew! And when she stood up in his English class at 11:32 a.m. and looked right past him with those honeydew-green eyes as she recited her favorite poem, 'How Do I Love Thee', with a voice as musical as the angels of Heaven... well... that was it!

But Melody... was even more divine.

Melody aimed a sidelong glance at Calvin when he nudged her, a grin spreading across her face and tugging at the corners of her mouth, raising her freckled cheeks with something that could only be described as happiness. At that moment she wished she had a better power than what she had, something more useful. Something that would enhance her life rather than prolong it. She didn't wnat to be kept alive. What she wanted was for the life she had to be better. She wanted to be sure of something for a change, but what was there to be sure of? Well, she had friends now. For the first time in quite a while, she wasn't alone. She let her smile die down a bit, then mouthed 'brilliant'.

Of course, Calvin had matured enough to know now that sometimes divinity had nuts. And that just because a girl seemed like she was sent from Heaven, didn't always mean that she was sent for you. He wasn't even sure if Melody liked him. But he was hopeful. He liked Violet too actually, but he felt some kind of deeper connection with Melody, and had since he first saw her on the bus this morning. And that red hair was gorgeous!

He realized he'd let his mind wander a bit too far and brought his attention back to the here and now. Violet had joined them now and the four of them made an interesting sight on the floor of the gym. Others were looking at them, wondering what was going on, but he wasn't about to explain. This was a moment just for the four of them. And somehow, Calvin knew it was the first of many moments they would all four share together as one.
