Calvin was getting nowhere. He couldn't go in the girl's dorm; it was against the rules. Zia was in there; he could sense her emotional pain even this far away, but there wasn't much he could do without mindbeaming her, and he was too far away to do that with any degree of accuracy.
Calvin knew he couldn't save the world, but that knowledge didn't stop him from wishing he could. He wanted to make it all better, for everyone, take all their pain away. But he also knew that, even though it left a bitter taste in his mouth, he had to let people experience their pain... so they could learn from it and learn to push past it and get on with life. Pain was always going to be there; it was part of life; it was what made pleasure, in it's contrast, feel so... wonderful.
He kicked the ground a few times in his frustration. Then an idea came to him. He found her window, at least the window that seemed to be closest to what he felt was Zia, picked up some pebbles, and began tossing them, one by one, against the glass. They plinked and plonked, and each fell to the ground without accomplishing their mission. Zia wasn't hearing or answering them. He stilled himself and tried to feel for her. She was better. "Oh well," he sighed, "Guess I'll let her come out when she's ready." He mindbeamed her, gently, trying to suggest comfort and reassurance. He wasn't sure if it would work this far away though.
