Derry stood nervously, glancing around at all the others the same age as her. This year, she was the only person in her family to have a chance in the Games, since Meg had turned 19. She knew pretty much everybody here, and it saddened her to know that one of them was going to die. There was the girl who lived down the road from her family. There was the boy whose father was close friends with her father. All of these people, living normal lives like hers, who each stood a chance of being torn apart from their families and put in an arena to fight to the death. Two families will never be the same again, after today.
On the scaffold, a man put his hand in the glass bowl for the female tributes.
Please not me, please not me. she thought, hoping that somebody else would have to see the horrors in the Arena. The man looked up at the crowd solemnly, giving no hints of emotion.
"Derry Wood." he said, his voice booming across the square in which they were gathered. She heard her mother give a sob, and turn around. Meg was standing, her hand over her mouth, glancing at her. Her father and Cody was comforting her mother, and the rest of her siblings were looking around, confused and upset. She felt the cameras stare at her, and she wanted to push them away, although she knew that if she did, her family could be hurt. Instead, she stared at them, her sadness reflecting in her eyes, and let herself be taken away by the Peacemakers.
