Sod his dwindling energy reserves. Gaster let his magic hum around Sans, letting it keep him elevated, freeing up Gaster's good arm.
He lent forward and wrapped it around Underfell, drawing the shorter skeleton closer to him in a one armed hug.

"I'm sorry. I truly am. No one should have to go through that on top of what I - What your version of me did. But... from what I hear of your universe... it sounds like he's trying to protect you. He probably doesn't know any better on how to do that."

sans didn't move. he just stood there, mentally disturbed by gaster's hug. it sent chills up his spine.

Gaster felt Underfell freeze up in his embrace, and pulled back, releasing the alternate version of his son.

"Sorry, that was stupid of me." He mumbled to the ground. "My point still stand though. I honestly don't think that grumpy skeleton in my lounge has anything but good intentions towards you. He just doesn't know how to show it."

underfell loosened. "he doesn't. i swear on it. all he wants me to do is work." he answered, eyes narrowing.

"Well that's not what I heard him say earlier." Gaster said gently. The situation reminded him of Sans and Papyrus' first day of school. A teacher had ordered Sans to do something and for the next week he'd been convinced it was all just another test.
When Sans had something in his head, it was almost impossible to get it out.

"i still don't trust you. so i won't believe you." sans muttered, rolling his eyes dramatically.

Gaster let out a small snort of genuine laughter, a small smile growing across his skull.
"As stubborn as ever. Somethings will never change!"

He shook his head, although his amused smile still clung to his face.
"If that was how he thought, care explaining to me why he's sat in my living room, muttering about your whereabouts, and being reasonably comfortable standing there with several versions of both you and himself? And answer me this, truthfully, has he ever hurt you badly enough to be life threatening? I'm not justifying things, but I've got a theory about things. I think he's just regurgitating your experiences in the lab. He doesn't know any better, he's your younger brother. We can fix this."

sans nodded at the life threatening thing. he remembered when papyrus got so mad, sans ended up getting thrown across the room and into the wall. "we can't fix this. so just shut up. i'll come back to my house, but i'm not going in it."
