"There's, what, 18 of us here?" (I may have done my math wrong don't hate me) James said, trying to reassure her. "I know what you mean, though, I wondered that a lot when I was an apprentice, and if I'm being honest I still ask myself that."

"Yeah..." I swipe a few strands of hair from my face and breathe out a sigh. "Alright, enough depressing topics," I chuckle. "I'm hungry."

"Me too," James said, glad that she was done dwelling on it for now. He didn't really want to think about dying today. "Let's go raid the kitchen," he suggested, pushing himself off the bench with a grin.

I grin. "You're on," I say. Ditching the shoes completely - even if I have already taken them off - I race inside.

James bolted after her, his baggy shirt flapping in the wind and increasing his resistance. Though Onyx was ahead of him, she hadn't managed to gain anymore ground on him.

I glance back and grin at him laughing as I return my attention forward so I can avoid any obstacles. Since I let my hair out earlier, it's flapping behind me.

It occurred to James as he chased Onyx that he didn't actually know where the kitchens were. Hopefully Onyx knew. He decided to trust her directional capability and followed her. But that meant that he couldn't pass her if he wanted to find their destination.

I finally realize that I have no idea where the kitchens are and deliberately slow down. Maybe James knows?

James slowed, breathing still steady. He was smirking though, as he realized she didn't know where the kitchens were either. Of course, he admitted to himself, she probably would've beaten him there.
"Usually kitchens are in the lowest parts of the castle..." James suggested, though he didn't know how to get down there either.
