Well, Smeagol says he always helps and won't hurt a fly, but Gollum tries to murder Sam, bites off Frodo's finger, kills Deagol etc.

The ring corrupted Smeagol and created Gollum, but Frodo somehow manages to bring back Smeagol inside of him. I think it starts when Bilbo has the riddle game with Gollum, which brought back memories of his past life, and when Frodo calls him Smeagol for the first time in many years is what really did it.

As i said i do not trust Smeagol/Gollum as far as i could throw a horse by the tail. And Sam is smart not to trust Gollum!
