Currently, I've picked up We Have Always Lived in the Castle, a mystery novel written by Shirley Jackson and published in 1962, only three years before her death. I'm told there was a show based on it, but am unfamiliar with it. The book tells the story of what happens when three characters who've been isolated from the rest of their village for some time- an 18 year old girl, her agoraphobic sister, and her sickly uncle- have their peaceful, quiet life interrupted by the sudden appearance of a cousin. Despite its age, I think it holds up well. Jackson has a unique voice in her writing that captures and holds the attention well.
Afterward, I hope to read The Last Duel: A True Story of Crime, Scandal, and Trial by Combat in Medieval France by Eric Jager, which tells the tale of one of the last authorized trial by combat to be held in France, serving as true crime, history, and drama.
