I really dont like to watch a lot of movies, since I rather watch some very good cartoon or anime - movies are often a big meh for me.
But when I DO watch movies, they are most likely movies from Disney and Dreamworks and so on - leading to probably my two favourite movie trilogy of all times: How to tain your dragon and Kung Fu Panda.
I kind of grew up with How to Train your dragon, while I recently watched all three KFP movies in a row, since I never had the oppourtunity to do so.
Both of those trilogies however, absolutely failed the third entry, in my opinion.
Gonna start with KFP 3, since this was a bit better for me:
Really loved the first two movies, but this movie felt kind of a flat for me... I constantly felt like they cried too hard to pressure humor into this movie, making for more funny scenes instead of truly emotional/badass like in KFP 1&2. I couldnt really connect to Kai the way I did with Tai Lung and Shen and I really didn't like the Panda's from the Panda Village, which all seemed to resemble a specific stereotype where only Po's dad has some more personality to offer. Furthermore I absolutely hated how the solution to Kai was immediately presented and told instead of Po learning how to beat Kai, like Shen in the second movie, where noone knew how to beat him until Po discovered it on his own.
I hated how the interactions between Po & Tigress got heavily reduced, after their friendship was so well established in the second movie; also the furious 5 and Shifu barely had any screentime.
Meh movie, but I wouldnt really call it terrible.
However, HTTYD 3 is a movie I would really call terrible. And I don't mean it's visuals or soundtrack or whatever, but the godawful writing this movie as to offer. Where KFP 3 had at least some ok-ish writing and still enjoyable characters in it; HTTYD 3 fails in every way possible.
I already ranted a lot on YT about what went wrong with this movie, so I will try to be brief about it here.
All of the characters were absolutely out of character, except maybe Astrid - with Toothless being the worst character in the entire movie. He went from a loveable, intelligent and cuddly dragon to some overpowered, stupid, non-rational thinking and general unlikeable character in this movie. He simply ditched Hiccup and the others even thou in gift of the nightfury he destroyed the automatic tailfin Hiccup built for him, to show him he always wants to be with him.
Hiccup is an absolute horrible leader for the vikings, making stupid, fast decisions, while all the other characters were only there for comic relief and to say some nonesense in serious situations. Instead of asking important questions or something, whenever they were on screen, only jokes and running gags would occur.
The movie as some heavy pacing issues and went from place to place to place without even stopping somewhere for more than 5 minutes.
The Hidden World has a laughable screentime for about 5 minutes, even thou it's in the movie title and the whole premise around it is just full of plotholes and doesn't make sense to begin with.
The light fury is a horrible character with no personality or developement and with the only purpose of serving as a love interest.
Grimmel is a interesting character in the surface, but ultimately he fails to be a more dangerous villain than drago, since all he does is threatening the vikings while not acting at all.
The ending is the most stupid thing they could have gone with for the trilogy - won't spoiler here, but it's really really dumb and does not make sense at all; especially considering the last speech Hiccup gave at the end of HTTYD 2, before the credits roll.
I really do love the first two movies (especially the first one), but the third movie was just terrible; one of the worst writings I have seen in years - sorry /:
