The thing is, people don't seem to remember that we didn't domesticate cats the way we did dogs. They're newcomers to our households in comparison. So there would definitely be plenty of feral cats before housecats were a thing. That may be part of their bias; they see themselves as independent and "true" warriors, while kittypets gave up their true selves to be kittens for eternity.
With the smoke/silver gene, it would have to be relatively recent in his ancestry. To add to that, it could only come from breeds such as the British Shorthair, Maine Coon, and the Oriental breeds. None of which I can imagine running around the forest and mating with wild cats if their owners were sensible.
And, as Arcaii said, after time you'd eventually get the same colours; which are mostly black (brown) tabbies and black cats with various whitespotting and sometimes dilute genes (blue). Red can appear, and therefore torties, but it's generally rarer than "not red".
Cats became domesticated because they hunted unwanted mice. And now you know!
Greetings, citizens of the internet! You can call me Nitro Indigo, and I want to be identified by what I do, not what I am. I like Pokémon, The Legend of Zelda, Klonoa, among other things. I also have a YouTube channel.
