Good luck to you! I hope you get in!

Thanks. :)

I actually never got around to watching most of the Oscar nominees. The only nominees for Best Film that I'd seen were Bridge of Spies, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Room. The other films do look really interesting though. I'm surprised that Black Mass didn't get any nominations. I thought that critics went crazy over that film?

What did you all think of Chris Rock hosting? I thought he did a great job in the beginning, but by the end of the show he was just making jokes about the same topic... I mean I get that it was controversial and it needed to be addressed. I just thought he'd get it all out in the beginning and then move on to jokes more related to the nominees or something. I also still think that a lot of people were being way too oversensitive about the whole issue. Will Smith's wife was so butthurt that her hubby wasn't nominated and went down the "it's cause he's black isn't it!" route... Did she actually see the other nominees though? It's not like they were less deserving. To get the nomination you don't have to just be a great actor, you have to have given one of the best performances in that year, better than all the other wonderful performances performed every year by other great actors. It's not a simple case of Be Famous + Give a good performance = get nomination.

WillGraham, what was dull about Anomalisa? I haven't watched it yet. All I know is that it's an animation geared towards adults.

poleberr, I understand where you're coming from, about the nominees and all, the issue is that there were really great movies that came out this year staring and directed by people color, Beasts of No Nation starring Idris Elba (a movie won a multitude of golden globes and sag awards, at least one of which was for Elba's performance, if my memory serves), Creed Staring Micheal B Jordan (ironic how the main white character was the one in the movie nominated), and Straight Outta Compton, just to name a few that most definitely deserved nominations based on both success and critical acclaim, but didn't get them, even indie movies like Dope, that also came out this year with a largely poc cast are overlooked, which really sucks as a whole. The issue isn't that there weren't good performances by non white actors, the issue is that the non-white actors are being overlooked.

Physical-Pancakes, thanks, I've been so confused about the whole ordeal. I knew about Straight Outta Compton, but I didn't know it was considered Oscar worthy, and I really haven't heard a whole lot about those other films. Knowing that there were a good few films made by or starring colored people that were pretty critically acclaimed and also snubbed by the Academy makes people's reactions much more understandable. (Though I still think the Smith family is overdoing everything, but that has more to do with other situations they get themselves into... *cough*Jaden*cough*).

On another note, has anyone seen Life is Beautiful? I just finished it about an hour ago and it was such a great film, but I don't want to go into detail about it because I don't want to spoil it for anyone who has yet to watch it. All I really want to say is that I was much more invested into the story and the characters than I thought I would be, and it is one of the few movies that had me crying through the credits. Anyone who likes movies set in WWII or Italian films should give it a shot.

Life is beautiful is breath taking. I had to watch it in my Italian class a few years ago and I remember getting very emotional from it. Such a well done movie. I don't want to spoil anything as well but it is a must see!

I watched Life is Beautiful in my french class, dubbed over in french because our teacher loved it, and I don't usually like war movies all that much, but I was definitely crying by then end of that movie. It did such a great job of bringing humour into a dark situation, without undercutting the actual struggles of the people in the tragedy.

Has anyone seen Zootopia yet? I went to see it in theaters and I thought it was very good. In the beginning, it sounded like it was going to be all politically correct, so I'm thinking, "Great!" *rolls eyes* But then the message at the end, I thought, was really sweet. It was funny, entertaining, and enough action so that it's not boring, yet it doesn't scare any younger viewers. Any other thoughts?

The amount of hair on ONE animal is more than all the hair on the heads of the characters in Frozen combined.
And they individually animated every one of them

I read a review that said that they thought there was too many innuendos of adult humor. Any thoughts on this?

I personally think that the remarks that may fall under this category were well hidden from younger viewers so that only older people would get it. The only scene where I might agree was a little on the line of what's appropriate for kids was the references to the "nudist" colony. Although there's no discretion really needed, just the idea might be considered inappropriate to some parents. I know that in Europe, nudity isn't considered as bad as violence, where as in the U.S. it is vice-versa. So it really all depends on your views and culture.

I can't speak for the movie since I have't watched it yet.

As a European, though, I really don't understand the mindset behind violence being less bad than nudity. Is it really so damaging to expose a child to a naked person in the context of watching a movie? I mean they're going to be seeing plenty of it when their adults anyway. Probably. I know that you can say the same thing about violence, but the one big important difference is that nudity (on its own) doesn't harm other people, whereas violence is pretty much the definition of harming other people. Sorry to be using this film as an example of everything time and time again, but I've actually read accounts of people saying that when they were children their parents made them watch Schindler's List. Their parents skipped over the short sexual scene in the movie, but made their children watch scenes where Jews were shot at concentration camps, which affected them when they were kids in a pretty negative way. Honestly I would find those scenes more traumatizing as a child than seeing some breasts and Liam Neeson's butt. Oh no, boobs, oh the horror.
