or maybe because he knew she was with peeta, and that broke him emotionally and he couldnt bare see her face again. So he moved on and let them be happy

All three, I'm guessing. That is, he couldn't bear being around Katniss and Peeta, he felt guilty about his hand in Prim's death, he got a fancy job offer, his house in 12 was destroyed and there were too many painful memories there....

Basically, the kid had plenty of reasons to get out of town I was sad to see him go, though. I thought he was going to end up with Madge, but then she died...
