Trick or Treater:

Story:
"you know that calling upon the fae under the moon of all hallows' eve is not auspicious, elyth? and you know that what you ask of me is simply ludicrous. childish, even."
the faerie's brow was set in stoic indignation. from a hovering position, they drifted to land lightly on the leaf-covered forest floor. eithne's crystalline wings glittered a vivid, fluorescent blue in the glinting starlight.
elyth grinned sheepishly.
"i'm sure the moon doesn't mind, so stop being fussy. friends do good things for their friends, don't they? and what i'm asking of you won't take too much of your time. it's just a short illusion spell."
eithne's shimmering fur bristled as they began to pace back and forth, muttering, "mortals, always assuming magic is as easy as it looks."
the black wolf walked up beside the violet faerie, bumping them gently against the shoulder in a cheerful manner.
"lighten up, sunshine. i've seen you do it before, and it took you, what? less than a minute? and you're fantastic at it too! i wouldn't want this done by anybody less than a master at their craft. everyone one else will see how good you are, too."
eithne stopped pacing, unable to stop a smile from crawling on their face at the praise. evidently they took a lot of pride in their work in the arcane. elyth was sure of this from all the hours they'd spent on busying over spellbooks and practicing over and over again until they achieved the perfect result. puffing out their chest and pricking their ears, eithne shrugged modestly. "master is pushing it a bit, but thank you."
elyth grinned again. "so you'll do it?"
flicking their tail in a nonchalant 'yes', eithne trod towards an ancient elm tree that stood in the center of the clearing. its wide, wizened trunk twisted towards the sky, bare branches clawing desperately at the stars. eithne muttered a few words, and purple runes danced to life on the bark, searing brightly with a sharp crackle. the gray-brown bark peeled away to reveal the entrance to a dark hallow, strangely larger than it should be for the size of the tree.
"come in, then. we don't have all night."
hours after the spell had been cast and bound, elyth wandered the streets with a skip in her step. eithne had declined her offer to join her in the festivities, claiming that they had business on the other side to deal with. the only payment they requested was half of elyth's candy haul, which she had protested against weakly before giving in.
a number of flowers in varying shades of purple, violet and pink were wrapped firmly around her leg by vine straps. they seemed like regular flowers from a distance, but up close, elyth noted the runic inscriptions inlaid among the petals.
"charms, to keep you safe on all hallow's eve. all manner of otherworldly creatures roam the night, and not all of good will," eithne had told her.
"and this, my sweet, is the spell you were requesting. crush it into pieces when you want it to start running. remember: this'll only last the night, so make the most of it."
in elyth's palm was a figurine of a black butterfly, made out of a crumbly, flour-like material. its dull, onyx-veined wings didn't look anything like what she'd wanted for tonight, but she trusted that eithne knew her tastes well enough that they'd pull through.
elyth crushed the figurine, and it crumbled to ash. the dust sparked a brilliant violet, and before she knew it, upon elyth's back was a pair of shining gossamer wings. they were the same color as her tail, a glamorous, dream-like pink. she fluttered her artificial wings experimentally with a smile, pondering how different her life would be like if she actually was a faerie. this was about as close as she would get. silently she thanked her friend for their gift.
adorned in a shawl dotted with starlight, elyth hurried to the first house she laid eyes on, and gave the door three firm raps.
"trick-or-treat!"
