But I don't use GIMP so I wouldn't know =S

But I figured it out. :3
Instead of saving regularly, click File > Export > Export Image (or Export Movie), and save it as PNG from there. I figured out how to get it to look right after fooling around with the export options for a while. It works perfectly for flat images, I'll test it with animated images soon as well.

When you export it like that though, you need another animation program to assemble the animated .gif
