It's actually not too bad. I personally wouldve accepted. They probably thought that their 2001 January dog was a lot more valuable than your 2011 dog which was recently released last month or so. There's not a big difference.

That's not true anymore for 2nd gens. The original 2nd gens were worth less because they were available for multiple months. Currently, 2nd gens are available for a single month like other pets, so they are worth the same as normal pets. But you are correct about the age - it was a bit unfair because of the months difference. Not that much though.
