I think the owl is based off an Osprey. Osprey fits the adult owl pose so much better than any sort of gull.

I mentioned this before. The fact owls are also raptors helps. The pet has claws, now webbed feet.

Now that I look at at closely, it does look wore like an osprey, especially the patterns on this wings.
