Oekaki: Tips, Tricks and Discussion [posting open :3]

Postby omori » Sat May 07, 2011 1:47 pm

Hi there! :3 I'm glad you checked this thread. Whether you're a beginner at oekaki or you've got all of the elements perfect, here's your place to share your "secrets"!
Have a question about how to do something? Have some tips to share with beginners? Ask or share here!
I noticed the lack of Oekaki topics, and I wasn't exactly sure where to put any question I had, so I figured, "Why not make a thread for everyone to ask in?"

There are going to be some basic rules to prevent spam, but don't worry, no form to fill out!
1. This topic is about Oekaki. Please don't go off talking about something not related to the CS Oekaki boards.
2. Although this topic is also about discussion, please don't complain about people not commenting on your pictures, and please don't advertise your drawings.
3. If someone asks a question that I've put under the FAQ, please don't scream at them that it's spam. ONE person kindly direct them to the FAQ's.

That's all for now, but if deemed necessary I will add more.

FAQ

Here, I'll list some questions, answered by those who are more experienced in that field.

I've seen a lot of Oekaki drawings the look like they were drawn or colored with crayon... How can I do that?

Shida wrote:
Pen size two (123 opacity) or Pencil 3 or 4 (100-ish)
Spacing anywhere from 5 to 20
Scattering 200 (I've used it as far up as 400, after that it doesn't look very crayon-y)
And then color like a little kid. :) Be sure to leave some white spaces.

when making lines for your art, make the 'smooting' on the brush options 23-30, it makes the lines alot nicer

Never draw on the first layer you see when you start oekaki. Make a new layer before you do anything else xD

well lock alpha works like this:

1. make a new layer (make sure the layer is highlighted)
2. make a random doodle or a blob of color
3. click 'lock alpha'
4. pick an entirely differednt color than you chose
5. begin to color, if you notice, it will only let you color in the are you made the doodle or blob

Hey, thanks a ton! I'll definitely use the next time. x3

This is definitely very important. ^^ I learned this a while ago but I was always so confused how people actually colored in the lines instead of on the lines. But I figured it out after coloring in a bunch of editable oekaki's. x3

I agree! D: I can't figure out how Lock Alpha works. Help? :c
Thanks a ton, tioletpaper1! 8D

Also, can anyone tell me how to use the "reflect" setting? I can never figure it out. :T Also, how do people draw one thing, then take that and make more than one of it? Like, if someone draws a dog running, how do they take that exect dog and make one that looks exactly like that? I know it might sound confusing, so it's okay if you can't answer. xD Any help would be super appreciated! Thanks! <3
