Forget the cake thing. Maybe it wasn’t a good example. Let’s say... there are only 10 of this certain pet in existence and you manage to get ALL of them. People are willing to give you actual money for these things and you still refuse even though you have the exact same one sitting right next to it. Seems a bit greedy/selfish.
Again, not trying to start drama. I’m simply trying to understand your mindset for wanting more than one of the exact same pet.

It seems like your points are merging? If it's a question of why people would want multiples (and only that) then your whole "10 pets left in the game" scenario wouldn't really be a factor in most cases- though I have heard of people hoarding simply for rarity/demand purposes.

My biggest reason for hoarding is that I like the aesthetics of it- for example, I hoard this litter because I think they all look very pretty lined up together. I know that this especially rings true for some of the people who have mass hoards- sometimes changing the page size to view them all at once (and scroll down) is really satisfying!

I've also seen hoards that work to raise awareness or show support, such as LGBTQ-based pride hoards, or hoards all-pink hoards that raise awareness for breast cancer (just a few examples!) I've also seen hoards that are in remembrance of a family member, pet, friend, etc. Sometimes collecting and having a group to turn to helps in the grieving process.

I've also seen "less-loved" hoards, such as for rats or spiders. It's a cute way to show appreciation to the pets who are otherwise usually neglected or underappreciated.

There are really a ton of reasons that I've come across for hoarding! I'm sure if you search through here, you'll find a ton of examples of meaningful hoards. As for the scenario, that's a matter of opinion. If somebody were to offer real money for a pet (which, it should be mentioned, is against site rules) or other valuable currencies (C$, valuable pets/items, etc.) then it would simply come down to whether or not the person wanted to trade, which is their prerogative. c:

I guess I understand a little more. I still don’t quite get why, but I probably never will. I’ll just stick to admiring my single pets. Thank you all for your time

People who hoard Very rares or URs work just as hard as someone trying to get there dream pet.

Welcome to life.

People have been collecting things since the dawn of people.
Ever watched Pawn Stars or American Pickers?
Those guys go around collecting stuff. Some of it is expensive and rare and valuable.
When you already have one super expensive rare and valuable thing, it's fun to find another one and manage to trade or negotiate for that one as well. Get five or six or all eight known in existence and it's a super incredible feeling of accomplishment. Life ain't fair and life ain't even. If we both want something and I have the resources to pay more for it, I'm getting it.

Back to American Pickers...theyll go into some guys storage sheds and find something they really want. Problem is the guy dont want to sell. They admire his collection and move on.

Moral of the story is just because you want something doesn't mean you're entitled to it.

just going to put my two cents in here, i've never not been able to find a pet on cs. i haven't always been able to afford it (happens 90% of the time) but i've never thought "o wow i can not find a single one of that pet"

i found the best way i thought about it is, when i look at players with amazing collections and get that little green envy build, i think about people who have less than me and maybe they do that at my collection. so i probably have like a good few list pets, whereas a hoarder has a few of the same one. so because i have more than one list pet does that mean i am greedy for having them? if it doesn't then why are hoarders greedy for having more than one just because it's a duplicate? c:

i personally hoard because i'm struggling to complete the rest of my wishlist due to lack of fodder, and without it i'd lose interest in the game

The way I see it as a hoarder, you hoard a pet because you have an obsession with it,therefore one or two wouldn't be enough.
A couple of good examples are the above^.
idk what to put in my signature so here are some really good albums:

angel witch by angel witch
iron maiden by iron maiden
heaven and hell by black sabbath
thundersteel by riot
the dark side of the moon by pink floyd
in the court of the crimson king by king crimson
holy diver by dio
kill 'em all by metallica

if you listen to those, you automatically pass the vibe check

οh and another thing, trades will 99% be left to rot! sorry

As an insane hoarder (are 300+ active endless hoards enough?) I give also my two cents here.

    I'm okay with people not understanding the whole hoarding-thing. But what I can't understand is this greed and sometimes even hate against hoarders. I got so many trades canceled because of I am a hoarder; just a few reasons why;
"You are a hoarder, I expect overpay"
"You are a hoarder, you are taking certain pets away from other people who want it"
"You are a hoarder, you are a horrible person, who needs so many duplicates anyway?"

    And the best one:
"Animal hoarding is bad, why do you do this? You wouldn't do it in real life"

Gawd, how I hate arguing and explaining myself. I hoard, because I love the pets, and because of the fact that every hoard has its purpose in my collection. They all are somewhat-themed. This is how I sorted them

    ► - non-related hoards I*
◊ - related to DoktorFroid (German Youtuber), Diary of Dreams, Fewjar (German band)
    ○ - related to Sherlock BBC
    ◌ - Irish / Chinese related hoards
    ● - non-related hoards II*
◘ - hoards related to chemicals, Borderlands 2/TPS and Portal
◙ - hoards related to Far Cry 3 + 4 (because I adore Vaas Montenegro & Pagan Min, obviously)
    ★ - non-related hoards III*
    ☊ - non-related hoards IV*

*named after songs or quotes, or just an idea of mine

Sometimes I have the feeling people think we get all hoard pets gifted. In a certain way it's right, but not all of the hoard pets are gifts. For many of them we traded fair. It's not bad to hoard pets, they're just pixels, you don't hurt a living and breathing animal.

An easy way to look at it is, hoarding extends the game and gives a new angle on trading and what is considered a collection.
What's easier to get, 100 of the same common or that last OMGSR pet that's on your wishlist?

For many users, getting those last rare and valuable pets is way out of reach. They don't have the trade fodder for it and it would take another few years to build up enough. That's pretty discouraging to have to work for several yeas to get a reward.

So many hoarders pass the time by creating their own smaller goals while working towards a larger one.
For me, I enjoy getting pets out of my trade folders in exchange for pets I like. It means I spend time and energy getting pets that are a lot easier to obtain and I can keep playing the game for as long as I keep trading.

Honestly, I used to see hoarding the same as the other person that was asking the question, but once I sat down and honestly thought about it, its not a big deal, at all. Its the same as someone else having one of the pets, Nd them not willing to trade it. Whats the difference between if its you or another person? Just because you have mutiple doesnt mean that you deserve it any less, especially bc so many people expect overpay for hoard pets. Also, relating to your post, I completely agree. Im in a spot right now where Im kind of stuck, because the three lists I do have, I want to keep. Other than that I have barely any fodder to trade for other lists I want, so working towards a smaller goal keeps me interested. :)

Also, straying away from all of us having to explain ourselves:

Chocolate Dream
Ive almost hit 30 of these guys and I still havent decided my end goal  I was thinking 40, but now that Im almost there maybe 50? I may decide to make them infinite, who knows. Also the fact that they dont line up really bugs me but I dont know whats causing it, the names or the amount of pets?

Honestly, my lower value favorites tend to be harder to find than the list pets. List pets people throw around all day long. Trading up and down the list...always trying to get something better...something new...something different. Pretty much the way I see it, list pets are a dime a dozen. Commons and uncommons from a few months ago are the rarest pets on the site.

It's just the nature of trading and collecting.

Hoarders work incredibly hard for their hoards. Most of us overpay in order to get the pets we want. It takes patience just like any other collection. Often hoarders actually have a harder time because so many are unwilling to trade to hoarders. Having many of a pet that you feel is beautiful is exciting because you get to have them all lined up together with no other pet distracting from their glory. For me personally, hoarding is incredibly therapeutic. Just going after a single pet for a hoard over and over and grouping them all together helps with my anxiety and depression. Whereas trying to finish my single pet collection/dreamies is extremely stressful. So which do you think I prefer? Hoarding.
Just because I have multiples of a pet does not make me greedy. I pay fairly or overpay. How is that greed?
One thing I would like to point out is people only seem to care if it is a pet that is popular. Most people that hoard rats/horses/ponies don’t have issues because no one cares about those species. To me that is pretty hypocritical.

Another thing you have to consider is those that hoard unwanted pets keep the economy moving. It takes pets that will stay stagnant in trade folders for years, out of the picture and pumps wanted pets back into the trading process.

I agree, hoarders definitely take time and patience to get their hoards up. Time and patience, I personally don't have. I admire them for what they do. They find a pet they want, (most of the time common/uncommons,) and collect them.

However, the list hoarders I have a hard time fighting for. As it kinda seems rude and unfair to hoard the same list pet, when others might want them too •~•

But to each their own I suppose lol
