So this may be dumb, yet philosophical. But why exactly does this list exist? Why are the things the way they are and how did they come to be? I was very young, but I was here in 2011 when this stuff started and it still doesn't make sense, maybe even less so

Agreed. I am having the hardest time trying to wrap my head around this "Rares List" and how MANY of the values have been placed the way they are, or even added to the list in the first place. . . I truly believe this list has strongly affected the economy of this website -- in many ways, poorly. In my opinion, something this powerful being managed by non-staff members is bound to be a bit messy.

To those asking why it exists, it’s a guide put together by the community. Something people wanted for a long time I’d assume and it is merely a guide; no one has to follow it and nothing is set in stone value. Staff has nothing to do with this because it’s not official
I’d also like to say I find it a little rude you’d assume ‘non staff’ members can’t keep a clean and organized list. It’s mostly messed up thanks to demand, greedy traders and the constant bad advice given out to new users. It has nothing to do with whom put it together

We had a vote and people want this list to include more rarity and less demand. We’re currently working on getting all OMGSR pets above the non level. Think the zonkey was voted to the Coontail tier but I’ll double check that; picture list might be easier to scan over

Oh yeah no, I get that. I've been here since the start in 2010 or 2011. That's explaining what it is. I am asking why is it here and why it contains what it contains. It is unoffical but pretty much everyone goes by it whether they'd like to or not because it's hard to get anywhere trading otherwise (at least from my experience). I mean no malice, I am just simply asking the question of why ^-^

Because its extremely difficult to trade at all without a base to work with. Trading without the list was god awful back then because we had no idea what pets were more/less valuable. This guide is a guesstimate, which means its not official -- but it gives the community something to work with. Without the list we wouldnt know that a sorbet is worth less than a sunback, because then we would only be working with rarity tags and demand.

It is becoming more accurate as time progresses because we are focusing on rarity more than demand now, and changing placements of pets by moving them up/down depending on rarity, circulation, and (some) demand.

I think this might be their point. Both the sunback & sorbet came out in the same month and are both VR. One might have went vr sooner but with re-releases do we know for sure the sunback is actually rarer now and what makes it worth 6 times what a sorbet is other than the list says it is. This value includes no demand.

Regardless, the list still provides a standard of trading for the community and makes it easier because it provides a sense of agreement within the community. With the rarity list things will become more clear.

I agree with you and use the list myself and glad it's here. Just trying to see things from their prospective.

I definitely understand where the problem may come from wondering how we can maintain a list such as this. Especially since we don’t know more factual rarity to what is worth more.

This is the rarity list project. A group of users running code to literally count all these ‘list’ pets and compare numbers against each other to see what is truly more rare. Hopefully something that may replace or who knows what with this list in the future. ^^
