He casually stood, arrow in hand, eyes boring into my figure. Thin sheets of metallic gold shimmered and wavered around his wrists; a halo drifted aimlessly above his head, showing his godly status. His toga, battered and beaten, but still glorious slung around a shoulder. He still had a grin plastered on his face, even as I left him to--

This is my favorite mythological story of all time, no kidding. xD Hands-down. I love Cupid and Psyche. <3 And I love what you've done with them so far. 8D

I'm too lazy/unmotivated/distracted to write their gigantic story at the moment; {or at least skip to the slashy bits of it} so here's a synopsis. :3

Xaix is captain of a very, very respected and feared airship named "The Guardian". Like most pirates of his profession, he's quick, crafty, not above fighting dirty and just a little mad. But he's got the heart of a child, and a kindness that's quite rare in the world. Most of his crew are stowaways, street rats or exiles, and he treats them with respect and love. He's a respectable pirate, if such a thing exists- he'll often run errands for poor merchants, transporting goods to and fro. {Though they take the risk of their goods stolen, but that would happen on ground-mail anyway. So.}

Sadly, he's terminal. Xaix fell off the ship at one point- a particularly rough raid- and landed in a highly radiated zone. {This is a post-apocalyptic world; small amounts of radiation are everywhere, but certain zones are highly concentrated.}
Poisoned dirt and acidic water had gotten into his wounds from the fall, and breathing in the polluted air certainly didn't help matters. He managed to drag himself to a laboratory on the outskirts of the zone, where he stayed for almost a year in intensive care- His organs and blood had all been horribly altered, as well as manifesting some psychical mutations on his fingers, toes and chest, where his bones have grown like an exoskeleton over knuckles and ribs. To hide this, he attempts to cover them in silver plates, saying they're rings or modified brass-knuckles. Most people tend to buy it.

But because of his continual internal degeneration, he's supposed to have little over a year to live. Returning to his crew, he failed to mention this; and that's where Anuael came into the picture. A strange "prince" that had deliberately stowed away in his cargo for the sole purpose of finding Xaix, Anuael is a prophet who may or may not be an angelic being- the mages and Seers on board can easily tell this. He's there to take Xaix "Away", and the pirate really hates this. He's not ready to go, but despite his best efforts, he cannot seem to shake Anuael.

So instead, he takes the prince in and deems him part of the crew- Anuael has little to do and tends to shadow Xaix like, dare he say, Death himself; but seems to see more and more of this amazing person that the Captain is. He teaches him how to see beauty and mystery and adventure in the dying plaint, helps the poor and lost, and is generally what the world really needs right now. Not that he doesn't have his flaws. But when you're dying and living on the edge of fantasy, you tend to learn how to have as few as possible.
Anuael continues to count down the days until the Captain's death, but has a habit of cheating and attempting to heal the man whenever he can. He sees him trying so hard to fight it, but is torn between duty and affection. And while Xaix knows precisely what Anuael is, he still puts on his bravest face for the crew, refusing to give into the relief of death.

It's only a matter of time, though, and they both know this all too well.

Ooh, lovely, Selcouth. I've been searching for a nice pair for that 2nd gen for some time now, but the Sundog is wonderful for it. ;D I like the idea of the story too <3
