I lay on the cold ground of the pound cell, My caramel fur mixing with the scum on the floor. It made my insides writhe inside me.
'I wouldn't do that' She said, a crooked smile spreading across her face. She knew something.
'Why not?,' I managed to choke out. We had been silent for a while. Not one of those 'were so comfortable with each other we can sit in silence' sort of
things, This was more intense. what does she know? oh no. . . no no no she couldn't, could she? surely it was too early to tell. . .
'Do you know whats been on that floor?' I jumped from the floor immediatly although I was slightly relieved she didn't know. Stop worrying I told my self,
Your not far enough in for it to show .
She was everything I wasn't. Rough and ready. She could take anything in her stride. Her pale brown fur seemed to mix with the colours of the wall where the cheap
paint had chipped. And there I sat. Against the surroundings, I stood out like a white ghost. She eyed me up as if deciding whether or not I was worth bothering with. After another few minutes
of awkward silence, I managed to find some courage to break the silence we had been living in.
'How do we get out?' I murmered. I hoped she hadn't heard me, that her beautifully arched back wouldn't turn in my direction.
My luck ran out. She turned to face me and stared me in the face. The anger I saw in her face terrified me. It wasn't neccissarily directed at me however,
she seemed distant from me.
'Theres two ways. You get adopted or you die.,' She trotted over and leant into me. 'Pedigree looks, pure white fur, you won't be here long.' She turned from
me again and sat by the door of the grimy kennel. 'Besides,' she growled 'The kennel keeper will be able to tell soon. You can't hide you stomach' a small
laugh escaped from her lips.
I tensed, hackles up. 'You - You know?!?' This was more than I could bear. How could she do this to me?
She walked to me once again and stuck her small muzzle into my ear. I pulled away, the tickling sensation she caused was too great. She looked at me first in
surprise. After she realised what had happened she gestured to a patch beside her. 'Sit' She said nicely. Could I even go as far as saying that it was
pleasant the way she had said it? I dragged my white tipped paws through the mud that littered the floor of the kennel. Slumping my body against hers, I knew
the answer to the question I had asked.
'When did you find out?' I asked her, my voice shakey.
'I knew the minute you arrived. It wasn't hard to guess. I also bet all the pound dogs know by now.'
I buried my head in her scruff, not caring if it made her uncomfortable. 'I don't know what to do.' I gasped out between sobs.
'Just do as I say and you'll get out here. Me included.'
