It had been a nervous habit of mine since childhood to clean when I was anxious. The empty day that lay as the last boundary between meeting Chy again grew into long hours spent on my knees with a brush and soap. By the time evening came around, I was sore and exhausted, and my house sparkled like it had just been built.

The shower helped ease the tightness of my muscles and I practically crawled into bed afterward, falling asleep within seconds under the soft covers. My dreams passed in a sort of sluggish oblivion, so when I woke first, it took me a few moments to recognize that I was no longer sleeping. I yawned and sat half-up, rubbing my hands across my eyes to blink vaguely around my dark bedroom.

A furtive glance at my closed window told me it was still night outside, and the blaring siren of my alarm had yet to interrupt the pleasant silence, so I buried my face back into my pillow and decided I had woke for some foolish reason.

Just as I closed my eyes and settled back into a sort of drowsy sleep, I realized there were small sounds coming down my hall. For a moment, I was tired enough to believe that I was just fabricating it so I rolled onto my side and tucked the blanket up to my shoulder, content to just sleep. But the sounds persisted, a sort of sounds that stemmed from someone investigating my kitchen and I began to feel much more awake then drowsy.

Chy had told me that it was unsafe for him to visit. If he had sneaked into my house once to deliver that message, who knows who could had followed him here? I sat up, warily reaching to my beside table and closing my finger tight around the Mace I kept there. A determined look crossed my face; if somebody was going to try and break into my house and bully me, they were not going to find some poor damsel in distress.

Rising from bed, I cast the blanket behind me and tiptoed to the door, holding my Mace in front of me as I pushed the noiseless door open and peered into the hall. A long shadow was cast into the hallway, moving enough to prove that someone was in there.

I steeled my shoulders, slowed my breath, and came to the edge of the kitchen, hiding behind the doorway. When I glanced around the corner, I gaped at the man who was making a coffee with my machine. A coffee. What kind of criminal breaks into someone's house to make a cup of joe?

He was humming under his breath as he moved, stirring something into the mug that I had never seen before in my house. I furrowed my brow. So a man sneaks into my house to make a coffee and brings his own creamer. A creamer, I decided, that smelled a lot like cinnamon and peppermint...

Cinnamon and peppermint?

"CHY!" I jolted forward, running into the man and yanking my best friend into a tight embrace. "Oh my god I can't believe its you!"

He laughed as he twisted to face me, and I grinned, memorizing the face I had not seen in so many years. He had the same jovial grin and the same twinkling yellow-hazel eyes, and when he brushed my hair back out of my house, it was with the familiar touch of his knuckles against my forehead. "Hey there, pretty lady."

"What are you doing making a coffee?" I laughed, jumping back to perch on the edge of my counter. My hand lingered on the edge and without hesitation he reached out and linked his fingers with mine, using the other to stir his cup.

"I was thirsty." He chuckled, taking a sip from it with a content sigh. "Sorry it took me so long to get here. I was planning on arriving in the morning but I do believe its harder to track someone when its so dark." He grinned at me, unperturbed, but I faintly frowned. This was a question I did not want to answer but...

"How did you recognize me?" He asked in the silence between our questions and I laughed, satisfied that I was back on friendly grounds.

I winked at him, smiling. "How could I not? You're still the only person I know who uses both cinnamon and peppermint creamer in the same cup of coffee."

A comfortable quiet passed between us and he sat beside me, our shoulders touching. Absently, I rubbed my thumb over the back of his hand, wondering why there was nothing awkward here. We hadn't seen each other in decades; we were both adults now, both individuals. Eventually my mind circled back to the inquiry I knew I had to ask and I sighed faintly. When I glanced at Chy, I realized he had been watching me think with a tiny, knowing smile.

"You want to know what happened to me?" He echoed my thoughts and when I frowned he smiled, taking another drink of his coffee. "First off, I'm sorry I could never tell you. I... Well, I've regretted wasting our friendship for a long while."

My smile seemed to encourage him because he nodded to himself, set his shoulders, and breathed out. "I guess I should start with what I am. You've probably guessed, even if you're not willing to admit it to yourself." He chuckled, but I could tell from how he looked behind his bangs at me that he was hesitant to say his next words. My mind whirled to the worst possibilites. A murderer. A serial thief. An escaped lunatic.

"I'm a spy, Taci."

For a second, I stared. When I laughed, it sounded hysterical even to me.

"Seriously?"
