The little street rat couldn't help but whimper as the cold rocked his small body, curled under a tatty old burlap sack he had crawled his way under.
The small flickering fire of his match the only reprieve from the encroaching darkness that surrounded his weary and frozen bones.
But it was the small cheep that rocked him back to his senses, momentarily forgetting the frigid aura that clung to winter as he gazed down at the small white fluff that had situated itself on his sack.
It was with a blink and a rueful snort that the others began to chirp and tweet, their tiny fluffed bodies burrowing into his belly.
Giving a huff, he moved his match closer to the cluster of birds, knowing that they could do with the small bit of warmth it provided more than he did.
And with another huff, the gentle mongrel closed his lone eye and slipped into rest under the watchful eye of the full, golden moon."
