Y'ALL I am down to only three more pages of items to collect!! I'm so close to a complete
collection, but these last few pages are gonna be a doozy. I still need the cake set, some
valuable Halloween costumes, coveted plushies, etc.

man, the collector in me wants one of every pet, but as i grow older i'm trying to shift out of that mindset. i JUST finished adding all of the pets i don't own onto my wl + i'm now satisfied w my groups. do i really want to switch it up?

i think it'd be really cool to just have a collection of pets i really like and all others fr trade, going just based off of designs. that would be nice because i don't like many of the more expensive pets, like the old lists.

but trying to collect them all is kinda harmless in a virtual pixel game and it's a lot harder to get them all than it is to get rid of them. and back when i used to play a full collection was The Goal. but now as an adult the more i play, the more and more unachievable it feels. i know i'd want a full-full collection which to me means store pets included and there is NO WAY i'd ever get enough for old store pets.

idk, i'm just really torn on where i want to go.

I am in such a similar situation. God forbid I need to have a couple of jobs and can’t get on to trade for a hot minute...

In beginning to sort my very large ‘Pets without a group’ folder, I actually started separating out some of the pets that I truly love the designs of. Should I forgo the goal I had as a ~politely oblivious~ middle schooler to collect one of everything? Honestly seems unlikely that will ever happen. I’ve been on here since late 2009... you’d think I’d be waaayyy closer to a complete collection. Then again, I am very stubborn. I might just have to keep trading for a complete collection until I die.
I’m curious what others think about this post/situation. I haven’t really seen it talked about but I think it’s important to know that others are also unsure of how to pursue on this game.

The way that I personally see it, and others do as well, is that the longer the game runs, the more impossible it is. Especially for new players or those with only what the community deems as 'low-worth'. It will never matter that a UR rat is OMGSR, no one will trade a red cerb for it. That's just how the game goes.
If you didn't get a foot in the door in the early 2010's, it's sort of like, "Good luck on your hopeless quest." Even as someone with a decent stock I'd traded for before the big Rares List disaster, it still feels as if climbing any higher up is a moot point. It's just the fate of these sort of games. Neopets went through something similar, with an economy based entirely on opinions and values based on unified user beliefs, coupled with old designs that would never be released again (like our beloved store pets.) The 'unconverted' Neopets were the original line arts that users sometimes had the options to 'convert' to the new style or not, and those who opted out of changing suddenly had something of irredeemable value as time went on. It became impossible to trade for them, no matter how much game currency another user had, because they would never be able to be obtained again through legit, in-game methods.
I don't have any answers on how to make it easier. I've been roosting on these thoughts for a while. I'm content with what I've got, I've been more than fortunate, but I understand just how frustrating it's become.

I never had the goal to have a complete collection, mainly because I joined in 2018 and I don't spend money on in-game currency so it would be an impossible goal. I'm trying to collect my dreamies but this is already super hard, especially when it comes to store pets. The cerbs and the raven aren't re-released so my only chance of getting them would be trading for them but then I would have to sacrifice literally everything I own and I don't want to do that.
The problem is that they get more and more valuable the older they get => even if I collect many valuable pets I would be willing to trade, the old store's value would have gone up at this point. I have basically given up on getting a cerb or the raven.
At least I collected all snakes and all otters ever released. I plan on keeping it that way - this is a possible goal.

A complete collection is almost unachievable at this point unless you started several years ago. I used to have the goal of collecting every store pet and it wasn't until more recently that I realized how impossible that is. I mean there are the cerbs, the punks, the skelebun, the raven, the liontails...all of them trade for ridiculous amounts now because they are so old and valuable. I'll probably change my goal to just collect every store pet 2011 and beyond or something. A complete pet collection was never a goal of mine, thankfully. Even when I first joined I never was interested in that. I can barely get onto the list, let alone collect every pet on it ^^' The skelebun is still my ultimate dream pet, but I know it's probably not going to happen because they are worth so much, which is understandable. It's wild to me that they used to be in such low demand and so far down on the original rares list.

I had mentioned to my fiance that I cant remember the last time CS has released r/vr pets within regular litters (such as the May/June Lioness) or random malk dragon eggs when you adopt certain pets. The zebras get randomly released when you adopt horses, but they have been doing it forever... its boring. It seems like now, you can only get high demand/value pets if you pay for them in the store. Perhaps its by design, but that would be really depressing to me imo.

Weird analogy, but; this game should be treated more like a trading card game than it is. We are literally just trading pixels after all. Say, I buy a pack of cards (adopt a litter) and maybe there is a 'shiny' in there. The shiny's are hard to come by but different ones are regularly released. This would plant higher demand/value pets directly into the CS economy in the hands of those that need it most -- newer, active players. These pets would likely have high demand and keep older players scurrying for newer VRs, and newer players would benefit by trading with the older members for their older pets.
Instead I feel like the newer players, and most of the cs economy functions like a bowl of nuts. You grab a handful of pistachios (adopt a litter), they are all worth nothing/worth the same, and hopefully one day you will have 5 million pistachios to trade for a shiny. Lol!

Ive been here since 09 and a complete store collection has me shaking in my boots, even though I literally already have both cerbs, the skelebun, drink me, etc. We cant keep relying on old pets/store pets and Dec 18 to keep cs afloat.
someone told me they spent $10k in their history here on cs to achieve some complete collections and that makes me cringe that this is what cs has come to

Saw this thread and wanted to document what I've been doing as a new player! C:

Collecting has honestly been smooth sailing for the most part for me. I have multiple collections running right now with getting every nick pet as well as every heterochromia pet on the site. I also have minor hoards for certain pets I think are just cute (like borzois <3 I love them so much) I think the main reason why it's been so smooth sailing is because I've had a friend helping me along as well as many other people in the community gifting me things to help me add to the collection.
I've also had art on the side to help get me some really good fodder/c$ to help go towards getting everything.

I cannot imagine what it's like for fresh players who have no connections on the site wanting to start a collection and only having to go off of monthlies, gifts and pound (which is a whole other discussion tbh.) I wish there was a way for newer players to get good pets starting off without having to rely on gifts/giveaways/pound. It would really help in motivating newer players into collecting I think. c:

This probably belong more in the suggestions forum, but I agree. I am collecting few pets right now, but I worry about a UR version of them getting released. I will have to trade off one of my already beloved URs to get one. The Zebra thing has gotten old and tired. I don't even know if many people like them. I think throwing some other UR pets into the mix that could randomly be found monthly would be great. We have gotten a few rare pets in the monthly adopts, but they have been sparse. There was a rare rat back in October. Now, as for very rare pets, I don't think we've gotten one as a monthly in a very long time. Store pets are hardly very rare anymore, too.

You can view the collection messages by selecting the "Show Completed Months" box when viewing the archive!

This feature is available with search filters on and off ^^
When looking at the archive with the collection messages on: a red "X" signifies that you haven't collected any of that type of pet from that category, a blue square signifies that you have collected at least one pet from that category, and a green check mark signifies that you have collected all pets in that category.

Also, it went a lot faster than I expected, but after last stating that I was just missing one cat for a complete cat collection on January 6, I have successfully traded for a UR Tess Cat! c':
My collection, both sitting cats and standing cats, is now officially complete:

I may eventually come back to more traditional collecting, but for the time being, I'm happy maintaining the two collections I have and trying to trade for some of my smaller site goals~
