(No text quirk this time because this is something I really need heard.)
I don't think anyone really understands the concept of trade rules anymore.
The point of trade rules is not to control other people, it is not to show off your pets and it is not to display your views on the world/gifs/whatever.
Trade rules should be used to tell other people what you want and what you do not want. They are there to help everyone trade in a better manner, not have four useless codewords. You should never have to check if someone followed your trade rules, because you should know what you want and have put it in those trade rules. I often cancel other peoples trades for not following my rules because in those rules I state explicitly what I want. I don't want other things, hence the trade get canceled. But if I were to cancel a trade that was something I did want, just because they broke a trade rule, that would be silly, because I want that thing.
That brings me onto the topic of codewords, I get that you can play your game however you want, and I respect that, but I feel the need to state something; codewords are useless.
Suppose you had a codeword, maybe you do, the "point" of a codewords is to tell whether or not people read your rules. Now hold on a second, if you didn't have a codeword, couldn't you tell that they've read your rules by the fact that they've followed them? And if they didn't read your rules but they did follow them, does that actually matter? No, it doesn't. If anything, having a codeword scares people off. I myself very rarely trade with people who have codewords.
Another point I must talk about when it comes to trade rules is images. You should have one at most. A nice little header or something. If you've got a couple really tiny pictures you're using as bullet points, that one thing. If you have pictures of every single one of your dreamies and hoards and then fifteen GIFs of some youtuber, guess what, I'm not reading your rules. It lags my mobile when I try to.
Also, when making rules, very few people take into account the fact that some people might have trouble seeing things. So having brightly colored or tiny or hard to read rules means that some people aren't going to trade will you because it hurts them to try and read your rules.
Now people may ask, why do other people trade rules effect me? Simple, I have to deal with hoards of rule breakers, because they're so used to other peoples rules being hard to read that they've just stopped trying. If people could write easy to understand rules, this would be a lot less of a problem.
I've sort of started to ramble here, so I'm going to wrap it up into one nice little sentence that I think summaries my feelings on the whole issue.
Trade rules are not a stage, they are not a test and they should be easy to read; they are for explaining to other people what you want, so please use them as such.S!de n0te:
