Maybe a lot of people are hoarding them? I don't see what's so special about them, other than that sleeping one (which I managed not to get, as usual).

Hmm... I'm going to hold on to my star rats for a while after hearing this. I already got a trade offer of four common pets for five rats that I turned down. Maybe there's a way for newbies like me to get rares after all.

There's a hoarder offering rare and very rare pets for big bulks of star rats(60-70). Probably, that's why they are so wanted. Dont remember the name, but I saw topic in Trades section.
