I think it would be greedy if a single, well-off woman with no dependents walked past a starving man, begging her for some food from her groceries and refused to give him any.

I don't think it's greedy to opt not to give away pixels on a game. Is it a nice thing to do? Yes. Are you greedy if you don't? No. Whoever's on the other side of the screen will live if he or she doesn't have the rare sunback or an illusive zebra. And if they have a healthy state of mind, or even a semi-healthy state of mind, they will get over it.

People may do what they want with their pets, and if they don't see anything they want they can turn you down and it wouldn't be rude.

It's not hypocritical, it's just the game. You have to work hard to get the pets you want and rarely will someone give it to you for free. If they do it's not genereally when you ask. It's if they are feeling incredibly nice and give it to you. ;)

I agree.

I think you all get it a bit wrong.
Let's define hypocrisy first: Hypocrisy is the act of persistently pretending to hold beliefs, opinions, virtues, feelings, qualities, or standards that one does not actually hold. Hypocrisy is thus a kind of lie.
(taken from wikipedia)

And if those people say others should give away their pets for much less but don't do it themselves, although they say they believe it should be like that, they are in fact hypocrites.
And I think that's what SnuggleBunny meant.

I try to help the newbies of CS by buying a store pet or putting rare pets up in my auction. I try to help the new ones out but I don't give rares away for free.

The only pet I got really lucky with was my 08 winged halloween dog. I got him on Dec 18th advent and he happened to be my dream pet. Now I want to help others get theirs, but I 'm not just gonna give away a rare.

I never understood hording, but if people want to do it, they can. I also don't really get the whole "I want my dream pet!" thing either, but that's probably because I already have mine (see sig) and I'm not trading her for anything. Her name even refers to the ridiculous scramble rares sometimes induce in people (see the Greek myth about the golden apple and how the Trojan War began).

I mean, I have rares on my wishlist, but I'm under no illusion someone is going to give them to me or anything like that. If someone out of the kindness of their heart does so, then awesome, but I think it's really arrogant to think people are going to do it just because it's your dream pet. I was lucky to get Eris randomly in the 2008 advent calendar, so...

I don't do the whole "I help newbie thing" 'cause I know myself and sometimes I'm just not in the mood to be kind and sometimes I am in the mood to be kind. I'd rather have more reliable people be newbie helpers. Also, you can't predict the mood of a person because this is just an online forum and you can't tell if a person is tired or if they've just had a bad day or if they're feeling generous. It's human nature to sometimes be hypocritical. -shrugs- No one is perfect.

You can't help all the people all the time.

Heck, with as many members as we have now, it's doubtful you can make a scratch on the surface.
I had a giveaway last year where I gave away everything in my trade folder. Julys, Augusts, everything. It helped some people, but in the end there is way more want than what is out there and no one can be giving all the time. There are times to be giving and a time to be frugal.

Hm. However, I think this is a ridiculous cause for a topic ._. I mean, honestly, there are worse things to worry about than whether or not someone is a hypocrite because they won't give away some virtual pets.

I'll give away CS pets if the person can convince me they're not going to just trade them away again, or if I have a particular reason to. However, I'm not going to give away pets right and left. As much as I wish we could all have a thousand zebras/bananas/whatever and live happily in the sunshine, there's the small fact that's unrealistic and I'm not going to give away whatever spares of what I have to complete strangers for no reason. Does this make me a hypocrite? *snorts*

I give free things to nice, selfless people. I don't give free things to people who ask *eyeroll* Because that shows that they're more interested in getting the pet than anything else about you as a member.

And besides, do you think the people with multiple rares randomly found them on the ground? They traded for them or worked for them (sometimes with art, even, which is damn hard), and they deserve them as much as any newbie.

"Or when your a newbie and ask for your one true dream pet, but you are given a lecture about how they were newbies once themselves and had to climb the ladder of the CS ranks and were never given a rare pet before, so why should they give one to you?"

*snorts* I hate to tell you, but being a newbie is not an all-access pass to the world of free things and idiocy. If you're a newbie and ask for your "one true dream pet", most newbies who GET their dream pet immediately decide they have ANOTHER dream pet. And funny how all these dream pets seem to be July 08s *snort*

And I also hate to tell you that when I joined, nobody gave me any rares either. That's not the way the game (or the world) works.
