I just noticed that this one was rare and was wondering if it had just turned rare or if it's been like that for a while?

No it's still Very Rare^^ I don't think the rarities have been updated yet and I doubt it will happen as long as the advent calendar is still on.

If I remember correctly, some of the October Olympic horses were common - all are now uncommon. And a number of the 2010 Valentine's guinea pigs have turned rare.
