I've learned a few Hiragana from Duolingo, but I feel like the order they teach the letters in isn't that great? I thought it was best to learn by row or column or whatever it's called, but on Duolingo the order appears to be random.

If I remember correctly, I think Duolingo teaches them in an order that means they can teach the numbers concurrently. It's a really odd order, though. I learned them in the column order in each set of five (あ/い/う/え/お, か/き/く/け/こ, etc) and it made a lot more sense (to me, at least). I guess Duolingo's program is just condensed enough that they want to teach you an order where you can learn words at the same time, or something.
