Welcome!!! I was in your shoes once. (( Not too long ago in fact))
One tip that has helped me; adopt as many pets as you can. You can adopt for than one of each pet. And when they grow, even if you don't like the pet, it gives you more pets you can trade and eventually get your dream pets!
I think its fun to watch them grow. :3

I agree with Catastrophic's advice: adopt as many pets as possible since the newborns give different types of pets afterwards (even if they follow a same kind of pattern or color code) Also for trading, there are rules for the rarity of pets which depend on their year and how many of these pets are available. To make fair or equivalent trades you have to get a grasp of how this works. You'll surely be able to find some advice for that on the trading forum.
Also, even if trading is the main idea of the site, you can go into other things and do pets and trading as a secondary activity. Some people are very active on the Oekakis and art forums, others spend their times on RPs or simply on the discussion forums. So take your time to check everything out and see what you like best. ^^
