Tried out for the positions; I've always wanted to be an oekaki mod in particular!

However, I have a quick question! If you see someone unknowingly breaking a minor rule, such as having their age in their profile or signature, is it okay for a normal user to send a quick PM saying that it it's against the rules to do that and to avoid getting in trouble they might want to remove it? Or do you need to report it for a mod to take care of?

One of my friends had their age in their profile once and I PMed them and said it wasn't allowed, and now I'm wondering if it's okay to do that. There's no mention of that in the site rules and such. Can any mod or ex-mod help me out on this? Thanks!

While it may be tempting to PM someone in that manner because you have their best interests at heart, there are some really solid reasons that mini-modding is frowned upon. Especially if the user is a stranger they are likely to react to such a PM negatively, as regular users do not have authority to discipline them and they may also feel attacked. In addition, some users may send an unintentionally aggressive sounding message. In either situation you may end up being reported in return, causing a bigger situation for moderators to unsnarl.

When you report something and moderators handle it we can control the quality of the warning and identify if there are users that are repeatedly breaking the rules. While it may look like someone is unknowingly breaking the rule, you have no way to tell if they have been contacted for a similar reason before and may need stronger action. It is always better to report and let moderators take care of rule breaking, and go on enjoying the game!
