BASICS; Zhong Imps are, despite their appearance, a species of big cat. Named after the Chinese dragon, Imps are a descendant of the smilodon family, and their sharp teeth are a common feature shared with their ancestors. Imps have thin layer of scales covering their entire bodies, save for a thicker layer of soft covering their necks and tails. Two horns protrude from the foreheads of both female and male Imps, and the species most noticeable feature are their large teeth.
Zhong Imps are native to China, and are most commonly found in cooler climates, like mountainsides and forests. Most often, these little critters will make their homes on the outskirts of a mountain village, and occasionally they will pop in to greet the local children. They're a very common sight around humans, as they are curious creatures. Imps are nocturnal, and most often scavenge for food in the villages or the forests at night.
Imps are quiet, reserved creatures that tend to make good companions to humans. Of course, personalities will vary, but they're very loyal to their companions provided they have a good bond with them. Zhong Imps have a tendency to return to those who treat them well, and often hang around the houses of people who leave food out for the creatures. They're also commonly found around children, as their soft tails are a great source of fun for kids.
Imps are always found with a bell on their collar. Imp parents will weave the collar before their egg hatches, and then will give the collar to the babies once they are born. Imps usually decorate their collars with extra bells that they find, especially in the mating season. An Imp may not be seen without a collar, otherwise they are told to make themselves one immediately or be banished. Usually, the collars have intricate details and the prettier the collar, the more pride the Imp will have and the more chance of attracting a mate.
PURPOSE OF THE COLLAR; Every single Imp's collar is completely unique. Some Imps may use ideas or designs from their parents collars, but most of the time they will make their own. The collars always have a bell on them. Occasionally, more than one. There will never be an Imp without a bell on their collar.
The bells also have varying ringing sounds. They are usually a soft jingle, but it can vary. They use these bells to play a song that they compose themselves - kind of like a whale - to attract a mate or find a lost family member.
DIET; Imps are omnivores, meaning they feed off both meat and plants. They will eat anything they can catch, but prefer to scavenge for fruits and berries. They are often seen in banana plantations, munching happily at the bananas and their leaves. Their favourite treat is cinnamon, which is a common item for humans to leave outside the door if want to catch a glimpse of the Imps.
BREEDING & LIFE CYCLE INFO; Female Imps will usually lay 1-2 eggs each time they breed. Imps mate for life, and once they have found their partner, they will never leave them. Imps can breed once every month, and will only ever have one or two eggs. They tend to be with their mate for at least a week before settling down and laying eggs.
The size chart is as follows:
0 - egg, usually size of a emu egg.
1-5 - baby, size varies from large to housecat.
6-10 - child, approximately size of a fox.
11-18 - teen, roughly size of a wolf.
19-25 - adult, about hyena-sized.
25+ - elderly, remains same size as an adult.
SPECIES VARIATIONS; This species has a number of variations, some of which are rarer than others. Most Imps are born with the common traits [seen in the original pic], while others have rarer ones passed down through their bloodline.
Common traits include; horns, teeth, scales, bell collar
Uncommon traits include; extra horns, longer ears, longer tails, manes
Rare traits include; short or no tail, heterochromia, 3+ horns, no horns, hair, claws
IMP & HUMAN INTERACTION; Imps are fascinated by humans, and enjoy their company. While Imps are intelligent creatures, they enjoy learning more and more whenever they can. They also like the attention kids give them, which is why it's such a common sight to see wild Imps playing with kids in the street.
Frequently, Imps may return to houses that leave food out for them. Often they will come so consistently that the humans allow them into their houses, where the Imps will happily live. They're energetic creatures that need to be constantly exercised, but are also quite happy in the company of human households.
