You stumble upon a house that appears to be having an identity crisis, and it’s quitethe spectacle. One half looks like it stepped straight out of an old-timey movie about the Wild Wild West, complete with wooden beams and a dusty porch. The yard is covered in sand and arranged in a bizarre pattern that resembles a desert landscape. Scattered around are various cacti in an assortment of quirky pots, each one more eccentric than the last. One particularly amusing cactus sports a pair of oversized sunglasses and a colorful bandana as if it’s ready for a day under the sun. A small boombox sitting on a rickety table pumps out the rhythmic sounds of horses galloping, mixed with the occasional whiny and crack of a whip, creating an atmosphere of old Western adventures. Nearby, a small rocking horse is saddled up, completing the cowboy scene with its rustic charm.

But as you glance to the other side of the yard, you’re greeted by an entirely different theme. There, a small kiddie pool filled with a shimmering, water-like substance beckons for attention. Floating atop the surface are several little boats, some bobbing cheerfully while others have succumbed to the depths, adding a touch of whimsy to the aquatic landscape. Blow-up palm trees sway gently in the breeze, giving the impression of a tropical getaway that feels miles away from the dusty frontier. Mismatched lawn chairs are scattered around, each one a unique style, inviting guests to sit back and enjoy the absurdity of it all.




As you approach the door, puzzled by the clash of these two distinct themes, you hear a commotion coming from inside. “No, no, no! The theme was PIRATES! Not COWBOYS! Ugh, what are the trick-or-treaters going to think of this?” A frantic voice echoes from behind the door, filled with exasperation. A calmer, more collected voice replies, “Well, we could just ask them.” There’s a long pause that hangs in the air, and feeling a mix of curiosity and amusement, you decide to knock on the door. You hear some scrambling on the other side, and suddenly the door bursts open, revealing two figures that embody their respective themes perfectly. One is a blue and black goat-like kalon with a full pirate outfit. The brown stoic kalon stands confidently as a cowboy, donning a wide-brimmed hat, a bandana around his neck, and denim that looks like it’s seen many adventures.


“Happy Halloween!” they both exclaim in unison, their voices cheerful and inviting, completely undeterred by their contrasting appearances. “Welcome to the Etho and Ethos house!” the pirate adds, grinning widely. “Would you like some candy?”

As you stand there, amazed by the two perfectly dressed kalons in front of you, the pirate, Ethos, leans forward with a twinkle in his eye. “Ahoy there, matey! So I see ye’ve laid eyes on our splendid decorations! I reckon the Deep Blue side really piques yer interest, eh?” He nudges the cowboy kalon beside him, a mischievous grin plastered across his face. “Aye, we be askin’ ye to choose yer favorite side for a chance at some treasure!” Ethos declares, holding out a bowl filled with gleaming gold chocolate coins that shimmer in the light.

“Yarrr, take a gander at this bounty! Etho here thinks cowboys be cooler than us swashbucklers, but I say ye can help me prove him wrong!” He gestures dramatically, his voice rising with excitement as he adds, “Join me crew of the high seas, and together we’ll show him what true adventure looks like!”

Etho, lets out a playful snicker at the enthusiasm of his pirate counterpart. “Or, you could go for cowboys! The Wild Wild West is pretty cool, what with all the horses galloping through the dusty plains and the cacti standing tall under the big, blue sky,” he chuckles, leaning back with a casual air as if trying to downplay the excitement.

“Nonsense!” Ethos interjects, his tone turning more dramatic. “Etho doesn’t know what he’s talkin’ about with all this crazy cowboy nonsense! Think of the thrill of sailing the high seas, the roar of the waves, and the glint of treasure waiting just for ye! What’s a cowboy got that can match the allure of a ship under the moonlight or the thrill of a sword fight on a pirate’s deck?” Etho rolls his eyes but can’t help but smile at Ethos’s fervor. “Well, I suppose I can’t deny the romanticism of the open sea,” he admits with a chuckle. “But there’s somethin’ about the Wild West that just screams adventure! Those cowboys have their own charm with the rugged landscapes and the camaraderie of the ranchers.”

“Enough of this jabberin’!” Ethos booms, throwing his arms wide as if to encompass the entire yard. “The real question is, which side calls to ye? Are ye ready to join the ranks of the daring pirates and claim yer treasure, or do ye prefer the rugged life of a cowboy, riding the range?”
