Hm, honestly, I think it really just takes some practice. When I first started taking learning how to paint BGs more seriously, I went through a lot of different processes, brushes, and techniques before I found what works for me, and I'm still changing and figuring out new methods. My early BG works made heavy use of the airbrush tool and lots of layers, very different from what I do nowadays.
but to try to answer your question more, something that I think helped me was to do studies using a reference and focusing on blocking out shapes. also, something important to remember is that there are different approaches to painting and what works for someone might not work for you. so experiment with doing different things and paint a lot to figure out what works for you!
I really hope this was helpful asdhsaldhl
