I recently had the opportunity to hear an elderly Jew speak of his experiences during the holocaust. He was only 7 and 1/2 years old when he boarded the MS St. Louis in 1939, leaving Germany. He had been mistreated much of his life, but there was one part of his life story he could not say enough good about. That was the voyage on the MS St. Louis, a ship captained by a man named Gustav Schröder. This captain had commanded his German crew and staff to treat the 937 Jewish refugees like passengers on a cruise ship, which they willingly did. The person who I heard speak said he had never been treated better in his life, and it made a huge impact on his young life.
I know what I made isn't much... just a little scribble, and a sunset over an ocean is hardly a unique oekaki theme. I just wanted to make a little something to honor the captain who made such a profound impact on another's life, and on many more lives as well, no doubt.
You don't need to have a well-known name for you to be a hero. ^^
