Every expression, comical or not, can be made more vivid by using the whole character and exaggerating their features. For example, here are two drawings of an angry character. The one on the right is noticeable angrier because their features have been exaggerated more than the one on the left. Since you have a cartoon style, I recommend practicing drawing your characters with drawing memes like these: 1 2 3

Oh boy, there's a lot. For most of my art, though, I like to get the subject's colors down on one layer and immediately establish a light direction using a large airbrush on a low-opacity multiply layer. After that, I'll go through with a harder brush to get solid shadows, which I then blend and give a gentle gradient using a soft-brush eraser. I'll continue doing that until I feel satisfied with it. Then I just highlight were I need to and do my color correction.

edit; also. . . pancakes or waffles? this question decides your fate. answer with caution.
My favorite flavors are vanilla and strawberry. + I prefer pancakes because waffles are too sweet most of the time.
