Atalanta is a second-daughter turned queen when her older sister runs away with a ship captain she's in love with. Her brother was banished from the kingdom 5 years prior to her ascent to the throne, and is therefore ineligible. So Atalanta was given the position as heir apparent a mere 3 years before she was to take it.
As a the first child born to her father that did not have a predetermined fate established, he allowed Atalanta more flexibility in choosing her role in the kingdom. She had an instant attraction to the art of combat and (to her mother's dismay) the lifestyle of a hunter. With this background, she was given the position as Captain of the Palace Guard--a position she used to form her own personal group of specialized forces.
