He stands on the platform with smoke in his face
Trying to remember his mother's fading face
The fraying old string tied loose round his neck
Still feels to him like a noose choking him.
He watches the tears brimming up in her eyes
As she waves goodbye for the very last time
With a brave little smile
To him she does give
A letter explaining her final wish.
"Be brave, my love."
For Holocaust Memorial Day...It's a little late. Basically it's a little Jewish boy leaving Czechoslovakia for England just before the war. He has been put onto the train by his mother and she is sending him to England so he is safe throughout the war. The kids had numbers on string round their necks.
The train is run by Nicholas Winton, and he saved 669 children from being killed by the Nazi's during the second world war. He ran a train that went right across Europe to the UK. He even had fake British passports made so the children could pretend they were british to escape. The trains ran regularly for about a year before the war. Unfortunately, when the last train left on 1st September 1939 war had been declared and the borders shut. The last train full of children died.
