Belanor, A Ride Fit For A King

Postby Equid Phantasm » Fri Nov 11, 2011 11:23 pm

This is Cutewolf's fursona competition entry. Her fursona is a warthog. A ride fit for a King... well, it's gotta be a small King, maybe an Elven or Troll King. : ) Or, of course, a royal child?

I watched modern day knights in real armor at a local medieval event & got a little help (LOL, then Kudos) from Tundra on the armor. The light colored furry looking stuff is wool under the armor to prevent chafing like a knight's heavy shirt and chain mail would protect them from their armor.

No reference on the saddle. The holster looking side by the pommel is supposed to be a knee guard.

For those wondering, the 2 cones that come out of the side of the helm are where a warthog has two bony cone like projections and a weird plate like cheekbone. Should such a thing exist as a helm for a warthog, it would have to cover those projections. Pumba was not portrayed with them. They made him more pig like.

Head reference showing projections & Plate
Side reference used

After I made this, I'm thinking.. parade gear. But hey, ya never know, maybe a right hand knight or a king would wear golden armor into battle.

Cutewolf just let me know if you want me to make another with your silver spiky armor. Also, do you want some golden bracers, I put them on, but when I did they covered her stripes which makes her unique & different from other warthogs much as do her long tusks which females are usually shorter.

Love it! But then I love wild pigs dressed in armor XD

Someone would have to have very long legs to reach those stirrups... Anyway I love the colors, the armor, the saddle, the stripes, and especially the wool peeking out - that was a clever and well-thought decision. Great job on the shading too! Bravo!

Thank you for the compliments. Here's a point to ponder. A warthog doesn't get as tall, or bulky as domestic pigs do. They are not the same as wild pigs or wild boars which can be humongous. 3 feet tall at the shoulder and about 250 lbs average. Their size in reality makes it only seem like long stirrups. Maybe if the saddle were on a horse and they hung to the knee they would be long, yes? Agreed? The person riding this warthog would be about 4 maybe max 5 feet tall.

Quoted from: http://www.outtoafrica.nl/animals/engwarthog.html

"""Scientific Name: Phacochoerus aethiopicus
Size: 30 inches at the shoulder
Weight: 120 to 250 pounds
Lifespan: 15 years
Habitat: Savanna
Diet: Grazer
Gestation: 175 days
Predators: Lions, leopards""""

Your eye for detail is, as always, to be commended. You don't miss a thing! My favorite parts are the saddle, and the red flags thingamabob. You did especially well on those. Excellent work.
Sorry, I'm not taking art commissions or requests.

If you send me a PM and I don't answer it, please don't take it personally. I tend to read them with the intent of replying later...and then I forget. Bear with me, it's a horrible habit that I'm trying to break.

Wow, coming from the Chicken Smoothie god of realism, this has to be the best compliment ever. Thank you Oofay. Oh, the red flag thingamabob is barding tack like the knights would have put on a jousting or parade horse. :D
