The stoy breaks my heart. But, It seems kind of like a 1 in a 1,000,000 chance. Are you sure they didn't make it up just to get attention?

True, i thought of that at first but I actually know a lot of true stories about dog abuse like that... And on several of those I've met the dog once before it happens...
