i dont know what im doing wrong

Postby Happily Wrathful » Thu Apr 16, 2020 11:00 am

i dont know how to tame my love bird

I've had him for weeks now and no matter what i do he just hates me

he constantly wants my attention and screams at me until i come sit next to him but no matter what i do any time i try to get him up on my finger he bites me or screams at me.

I've tried the whole food in your hand trick and he just refuses to get on my hand, he will eat from it and sometimes he puts on foot on my hand but he will bite me if i try to move my hand farther away or he just will flat out refuse to get on.

and then when i think he just doesn't want me around i leave and he screams until i return.

sometimes he just wont eat anything out of my hand in general.
I'm starting to think maybe birds just don't like me and i shouldn't have gotten one.

What kind of bird do you have? My great grey was like that when I first adopted her. She was about 18 at the time and her owner had passed. I learned quickly she was just heartbroken and taking time to adjust. She took alot of time. And while she never bit me, she would go to the end of the aviary when I came in her room and not even look at me. Shed stop talking and was super quiet. Eventually I actually put a computer in there and I'd turn on a game with my friends or doing my school work or whatever else shed start listening to us.
I never closed her aviary door. She was always allowed to fly around her room (which is a full sized sitting room/formal living room) and after a week, maybe two of her just hearing my voice she started chattering a bit and then full on repeating sounds shes heard.... like I play the Isle... she actually mimics dinosaur sounds :o
Its took almost three months of me talking with her, and me respecting her space before she FINALLY flew put of her cage and would begin perching on her perch beside my desk.

I've had her almost two years now? About... but I can say I almost gave up too...
But birds are smart. And sometimes tricky, but it can be because of multiple reasons.
My girl was sad because she lost her owner... she was confused. Didnt know me.

Idk where your bird came from, or anything about its past but I can assure you, if you respect its space but always give it your time, it will eventually trust you to a point itll perch on you, or beside you. ♡♡♡
Me and Rosalie hope the best if luck to you and your birdo

wow, this sounds deep..
this seems like its very frustrating, I'm sure he's probably territorial or frightened...
ur gonna have to do some training to get him to allow u to hold him, sometimes it just takes getting the bird out of the cage to get him to drop the territorial act... ofc this doesn't all happen in one night
I have faith that you might be able to hold ur bird PLEASE don't give up!!

i have a love bird! his name is Jojo and i definitely needed to hear this so thank you. ill give him more space and let him come to me on his own, he came from a pet store where he lived with other love birds so i guess he might miss them which is why he's always wanting to talk to me.

Oh I love love birds! I had a pair of peach faced lovebirds back when I was in school! Very vocal birds. Yes, pet stores can be fairly traumatizing for birds (all animals actually) so just continue talking to him and offering him treats. Maybe turn on a radio or TV when you arent there so he isnt lonley. Because believe it or not lovebirds do better in pairs, and can often get lonley. I'm not saying run out and get another, just make sure he gets some noise (peaceful or normal talking) to help stimulate him. If your house is really quiet that could actually stress him out more, especially if hes used to being in a nosy environment. Again, not saying to over stimulate him. But if you leave for four+ hours and ita quiet during the day turn in a radio. Hell like that. ^^
Defiantly dont give up! Lovebirds are fantastic. I love them almost as much as my great grey ♡

Someone I know had a lovebird, and it literally died of a broken heart. Try getting them a partner, and put a cover over the cage to quiet them down if they scream.

Hello, it's me, Undyne, you might know me from YouTube or Discord. I like to draw, and I like FNAF and Undertale. I also enjoy roleplaying, only on Discord though. Also, I unfortunately can't be online as much as I would like, school is kinda getting in the way, but I'll be online whenever I can and want to.

Also, please click these

i don't leave the house very often and he's in my room so I'm always there which is why i didn't get him a partner! i will have to leave for a couple of hours every other day when the pandemic is over so that you for the radio idea! he seems very happy honestly but i always worry if he's lonely even though I'm with him all the time. I'm really grateful for the help if you have any more advice id love to hear it!

i did much research before i got him so don't worry, love birds only need a partner if you don't have time for them and he actually wont quiet down with a blanket I've tried it he just screams until i take it off. i don't have an issue with his noisiness its actually kinda cute when he coos.
