- FDs are voracious eaters, and as a result are well built for taking down prey. They are able to take down a wide variety of prey by using the force of impact to shock prey long enough for them to make the kill. FDs are diving hunters; they will soar at high altitudes and, using their keen hearing and eyesight, will track prey such as rabbits, rats, mice, voles, small birds, and such. Once the prey is targeted, the FD dives, folding their wings in tight to their body. They dive downwards rapidly, reaching speeds comparable to that of a golden eagle. If all goes according to plan, the FD will suddenly snap their talons open and land on the prey with all of the momentum built up during the dive. If the prey manages to dart away at the last moment then FDs will put on the emergency brakes- fully expanding their caudal fins and opening wings to rapidly slow their decent in order to avoid crashing and injuring themselves.
