- While sleeping the FD will fold it's substantial wings over its body in order to trap in what little body heat they produce, and to protect them from the elements. They often will rest in a semi-upright position in order to take off rapidly should they be threatened. A similar stance is the stalking stance, in which they will often perch on the ledge of a cliff, tree limb, or building in order to watch for prey. In the household, pet FDs are known to adopt this stance while looking for pets, usually choosing a lap, table top, or keyboard as the location to demand attention.
