Wind whipped through the thin leaves in violent attempts to rip them from their branches. Snowflakes moved in a chaotic frenzy, stopping only when they collided with a solid object. Amidst the vast white, a single Viscet pressed onward with his head low and his mane whipping in the wind, a small bird desperately clinging to his shoulder. Zíyòu forced his way through the thick snow and swirling winds, his legs trembling from the cold and exhaustion. After ten steps, the lack of sleep, food, and water kicked in and his legs buckled beneath him, throwing him into the snow. He laid there for several moments, panting heavily in the cold and watching his breath drift away in thin white clouds. His eye lids flickered faintly as the exhaustion spread over him like a warm blanket, gradually pulling him down until he succumbed to sleep.
Zíyòu awoke to the faint crackling of a fire. His eye lids cracked open, thin ice stuck to his fur and cracking with each movement, and peered around. He had somehow gotten into a cave that was cleared of the snow. A few feet from him, a small fire dance and threw light about, causing the shadows to dance. Several blankets were on him, covering most of his ice encrusted body, and Teeki laid beside his head, wrapped in a slightly dampened scarf. Zíyòu watched his companion shiver for a moment before pulling the little bird beside him and curling around him to keep Teeki warm.
A shadow stretched across the cave, luring Zíyòu's eyes to the brown, black, white, and grey Viscet that had caused it. For a moment, the two didn't speak. The Viscet tended to the fire quietly while Zíyòu laid on the ground beneath the mass of blankets watching her. "How are you doing?" Her voice was soft and gentle, but with a type of sternness to it.
"Better..."
"And the bird?"
"He's going good too... Who are you?"
"Reyes. Your a long way from home, huh?"
"Is it obvious?"
Reyes shook her head. "A pack member of mine told me about you. Nanook."
"Nanook?" Zíyòu recalled the brown Viscet with the floppy ears. "Your a long way from your pack then, huh?"
"Hunting. The hares are abundant out here."
"Oh... Thank you... For the blankets..."
Reyes nodded. "Your lucky I was out here. You could have frozen to death."
Zíyòu nodded slightly. "I didn't expect the blizzard..."
"I suppose that they can be unpredictable. I'm leaving in the morning. If you still need aid you can come with me."
"I'm sure I'll be fine by then, I'm already regaining feeling in my toes."
"Alright then. For now, get some rest. I'll wake you up when I have some rabbits to eat."
Zíyòu nodded slightly. "Thanks again..."
"Of course. I'll be back soon." Reyes padded out of the cave leaving Zíyòu and Teeki to themselves. After some time of watching the fire dance, Zíyòu rested his head near his tail, completing the circle around Teeki, and gradually sank back into the abyss of sleep.
